Herbert COLE was born in Chippenham in 1889 (Newmarket Q1-1889 3B:536) son of William Robert and Frances COLE (née GREEN )

1891 census... Aged 2, Herbert was at Badlingham with his father William COLE [26] an agricultural labourer, born Chippenham, his mother Frances [33] born in Worlington and sister Beatrice [4] born in Chippenham.

1901 census... Aged 12, he was at 3 Great House Yard, Worlington, with his parents and sister Beatrice. Sister Beatrice Maria married Richard SHINN in 1909.

1911 census... Aged 22, a farm labourer (now recorded as born in Badlingham), he was at Bay Farm, Barton Mills where his father was now a shepherd, also there were his mother and his cousin Lilian Cole [6] born in Chelsea. One of the three children of the marriage had died.
Sister Beatrice, as Beatrice SHINN was living at 34 North Street, Burwell. His mother Frances died in 1914.




He enlisted in Newmarket on 18th January 1915, and then attested in Woolwich, giving his age as 24 yrs 11 months and occupation as horseman, from Church Lane, Worlington.
His apparent age was recorded as 24, 5'4" (162.6 cm)tall and chest 36-38.5" (91.4 to 97.8 cm). Next of kin, father William Robert COLE, Church Lane, Worlington. He had been working for John F. Collen who gave him a good reference.
He was admitted to North Staffordshire Infirmary, Hartshill, Stoke on Trent on 6th April 1915 with "malignant enteric" and died of Enteric Fever on 24th April 1915, after just 92 days military service,hence no medal entitlement.

The ASC Horsed Transport Reserve Park Companies filled a variety of administrative and back-up roles. 238 Coy was formed February 1915 and served as 37 Reserve Park. Later they were converted into 14 Auxiliary HT Company and sent to Salonika.
